The Cold Chain’s New Arithmetic
- Date: 20.05.26
How an Italian logistics pioneer is turning decarbonisation into a competitive edge.
In pharmaceutical logistics, reliability has long been a function of diesel. The stakes are surgical: temperature deviations of a few degrees can invalidate a multi-million-euro cargo. Historically, this risk was mitigated by noisy, diesel-guzzling and carbon-intensive auxiliary engines running 24/7. Now, the Italian logistics specialist Chiggiato Trasporti is proving that reefer electrification for pharmaceutical transport is no longer a niche experiment, but a viable solution for even the most demanding long-haul profiles.
Electrified cooling: In for the long haul
The transition to electrified cooling is driven by stark arithmetic. A standard diesel-cooled trailer consumes approximately 360 litres of fuel per week. By deploying the BPW ePower axle within the hybrid Thermo King AxlePower system, Chiggiato has reduced this to 60 litres—an 80% collapse in consumption. For the balance sheet, this is a significant opex victory.; fFor the environment, it represents a weekly saving of nearly 800kg CO2 per unit. The residual consumption of 60 litres is a testament to the system’s primary reliance on regenerative braking —a strategy that challenges the industry dogma that recuperation is only effective in urban, stop-and-go traffic: Following a 2,000km trial to Denmark, the system is now a fixture on the Italian long-haul network. Even on highways with infrequent braking, the ePower axle harvests sufficient energy during deceleration to sustain the battery packs. To satisfy strict GDP (Good Distribution Practice) standards, the system maintains a diesel backup as a fail-safe, ensuring 100% thermal integrity with a fraction of the traditional carbon footprint.

Strategic Differentiation
Beyond fuel savings,
Chiggiato’s investment serves two broader strategic objectives:
Human Capital: In a sector hit by chronic driver shortages, the "silent night" is a recruitment asset. Eliminating the constant thrum and vibration of a diesel fridge improves driver rest and consequently road safety.
Supply Chain De-risking: As pharmaceutical giants face pressure to address "Scope 3" emissions, Chiggiato’s "100% EV Powered" branding signals that the company is anticipating future ESG regulations rather than merely reacting to them.
Brand Capital: The ePower deployment has served as a powerful marketing catalyst. Following a dedicated customer event and a targeted social media campaign, the positive market response has sharpened Chiggiato’s profile as a "first-mover" in sustainable high-tech logistics, deepening client trust.
The Verdict: A Triple Value Proposition
For Luca Chiggiato, the move is less about following trends and more about redefining leadership. His strategy rests on three columns: adding value to the customer, the planet, and the company itself. "If you want to be a true leader and make a difference, you must add value across all three," Chiggiato notes. "We don't just want to participate; we want to transform the market." By proving that high-tech recuperation excels even in the "braking-starved" long-haul environment, Chiggiato has removed the final hurdle for his clients, proving that the future of the cold chain is safe, silent and sustainable.
