High-quality trailer components give CHEREAU refrigerated trailers a second life

Quality pays off for fleet operators and is an important aspect of sustainability. According to Christophe Danton, responsible for Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSR) at CHEREAU, this is also particularly important when it comes to the selection of superstructure and running gear components. High-quality components guarantee a long service life for trailers and even give them a second life beyond the typical twelve years of use in this sector. CHEREAU demonstrated this during the IAA Transportation 2024 with a semitrailer from their own rental fleet built in 2012 and with a mileage of almost one million kilometres.
BPW trailer axles are fit more than one million kilometres of mileage
The trailer was the first reefer with a superstructure made from vacuum insulation panels (VIP). The insulation used in this model is 21 percent better than conventional systems and so durable that the majority of CHEREAU refrigerated boxes effortlessly pass the ATP-FRC repeat test, even after twelve years. Furthermore, the high-quality insulation also means that the transport refrigeration machine also has a comparatively low running time and energy consumption and can be used for another six years.
CHEREAU also strives for quality in the running gear sector and uses the system expertise of partners such as BPW Bergische Achsen KG so that an additional running time of six years is also easily achievable for trailer axles.
Refurbishment reduces the use of natural raw materials
However, technical development does not stop during use and modern equipment options can further optimise the efficiency of semitrailers. As part of the Forever Young Program, CHEREAU therefore offers so-called refurbishment: A comprehensive modernisation of the trailer. "High-quality insulation and durable vehicles conserve natural resources and reduce costs. This is particularly relevant if we upgrade the vehicle during its life cycle", explains Danton.

Intelligent systems such as Telematics and TPMS optimise operational costs
CHEREAU recommends the sustainable refurbishment with the Trailer-Telematik TC Trailer Gateway from BPW's subsidiary idem telematics and a Tyre pressure control system (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, RDKS or TPMS). The systems contribute to optimal operational costs and a reduced carbon footprint thanks to the analysis functions and maintaining the correct tyre inflation pressure. Further economically viable, retrofittable equipment options therefore include lightweight construction separation walls for multitemp compartments, corrosion-resistant pallet boxes and the Aero C air guide beam on the rear of the vehicle, which can reduce the fuel consumption of the tractor unit by up to 1.1 l/100 km when travelling long distance. New functions, such as the universal anti-departure system and an ascension ladder with integrated rails, also significantly enhanced the users health and safety.
CHEREAU is convinced: Premium quality pays off
Together with partners such as BPW, CHEREAU is taking a big step towards a circular economy and sustainability as part of its Forever Young Program. Thanks to the considerably lower cost of refurbishment compared to new procurement can extend the mileage of a CHEREAU trailer by a third. A win for the environment and fleet operators.
