BPW AirSave: Premiere in the "Ulmer Flügler"
- Date: 27.01.26
When it comes to maximum volume and high handling speed in beverage logistics, the "Ulmer Flügler" is hard to beat. The "Jumbo-Flügelsattel", as the trailer is officially called, offers a loading height of up to 3.50 m and can shoulder up to 56 Euro pallets or 42 well pallets. In order to achieve the maximum loading height, the semi-trailer runs like a low-loader with 17.5" twin tyres on cranked BPW axles with Airlight II air suspension. For the loading process, the entire side walls are folded up electrohydraulically. The fully open vehicle then looks like a giant bird with outstretched wings.
Managing Director Josef Seibold founded ITL Fahrzeugbau with his partner Joachim Weigel in 2014 – with a focus on tailor-made solutions for beverage logistics: "We not only build trucks, but also manufacture the complete semi-trailers for beverages from scratch in-house. They are all unique – because every customer wants something different. We are flexible in this respect, which is why ITL also stands for 'Individual Transport Solutions'."
Safe access to the workshop despite pressure loss
For the company Kelle Transport & Logistik in Sontheim, ITL Fahrzeugbau has now equipped a beverage jumbo with the BPW AirSave tyre pressure control system for the first time. Since July 2024, the UN ECE R 141 regulation requires tyre pressure monitoring or regulation systems also for trailers by law. After consultations with BPW sales experts Martin Eisele and Christian Kosney, the haulage company and the vehicle manufacturer deliberately opted for the more complex tyre pressure control system and not pure monitoring. In this way, the driver can still safely reach a workshop in the event of a loss of pressure in the tyre and does not break down with his vehicle on the highway.
Josef Seibold is convinced of the advantages of automatic tyre pressure control: "Pure monitoring means that the driver still has to control his system and keep an eye on it. The BPW AirSave system permanently pumps up the tyre pressure if necessary and maintains the pressure on all tyres. This gives the driver and the haulier a feeling of security that everything is working – especially for vehicles that are on the road in long-distance transport and are not back at the in the evening." In addition, AirSave reduces fuel consumption and ty wear, saving up to 890 euros and 655 kilograms of CO per year.
From long-distance transport to shuttle around the clock
The "Ulmer Flügler" is used in a variety of ways. Of course, Josef Seibold has customers who use the beverage jumbo for long-distance transports, for example from southern Germany to the north.. But the volume trailers are also used for shuttle transports, says Seibold: "We have a customer in Baden-Württemberg who uses seven vehicles for shuttle transports of only 20 kilometres between the mineral water plant and the delivery warehouse. In midsummer, when water is needed without end, they also run in three shifts around the clock."
Particularly in this tough seasonal business, maximum reliability is essential – and with the BPW AirSave tyre pressure control system, the "Ulmer Flügler" can now offer even more safety.
